Family Zone
We are here for you and your children — or grand children — and your "furry kids" as well. We've already created a "climbing wall" for the kids (and their parents), and all through 2008 we'll be adding more playground equipment.
KOA Scout Program
We welcome scouts and their leaders to our campground and hope to be helpful in providing activities and facilities that enhance the scouting program. Our tent sites are shaded and conveniently located to restroom facilities and hot showers. Picnic tables and grills are available at each site.
Many acres of undeveloped desert terrain outside the campground, but owned by Barstow Calico KOA, are available for exploration or special projects.
Our heated pool, club room, game room and shuttle to Calico Ghost Town and the stables for horseback riding are free to scouts participating in the KOA Scout Program. Archery is discounted at $4.50/hr. for scouts, and Barstow Calico KOA honors the KOA Scout Program overnight charge of $5.00 per troop member / leader (minimum qualifying group is five members, one leader.)
Children's Outdoor Bill of Rights
Concerned about childhood obesity, inactivity and a decline in children experiencing the outdoors, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger issued a proclamation endorsing the California Children's Outdoor Bill of Rights.
In his proclamation, the governor stated, "Spending time in the great outdoors can be a wonderful experience for people of all ages, and this is especially true for our youth. Participating in outdoor activities is not only an enjoyable way for kids to get the exercise they need, it also helps them develop a greater appreciation for out magnificent environment.
"To promote increased involvement in outdoor activities, The California Roundtable on Recreation, Parks and Tourism — a volunteer group comprising public and private organizations from the federal, state and local levels — has created the Children's Outdoor Bill of Rights. This Bill of Rights provides that every child between the ages of four and fourteen should have the opportunity to:
- Discover California's past
- Splash in the water
- Play in a safe place
- Camp under the stars
- Explore nature
- Learn to swim
- Play on a team
- Follow a trail
- Catch a fish
- Celebrate their heritage
